Rethinking emotional regulation, self-harm and resilience

A science-based approach to understanding emotional regulation and self-harm among young people.

The huge rise in teenage self-harm and anxiety shows we need to be talking much more about emotional regulation, trauma and resilience.

The challenges young people face are not personal; they are relevant to us all. We’re biologically designed to survive in a world very different from the one we live in today.

Understanding the human nervous system and the huge impact it has on our daily lives, health and relationships is a foundation for future success and resilience.

Our training draws on insights from neuroscience, psychology and lived experience to explain how the nervous system works constantly to keep us safe and how self-harm is a coping strategy that taps into our mind-body intelligence.

We share scientific insights, conversation starters and practical tools for emotional regulation and resilience. At the heart of our approach is recognising that we must dismantle the stigma around self-harm so that the huge number of young people who are relying on it can fully heal and reach their potential.

“Self-harm elicits so much fear and confusion; it makes no sense – until it does. I discovered the power of tapping into the mind-body science of the nervous system by applying it to my own personal experience of healing from self-harm when I was young. With so many people struggling with anxiety and self-harm today, I have decided to share what I wish someone had told me 25 years ago. ”
